UPDATE: 1:25 PM THURSDAY MARCH 26
We've been told that rules for the the bus distributions have changed.
Children do NOT have to be present for the pickup.
According to an email from the people staffing the bus that stopped earlier in front of Refugio: "We understand that parents do not want to bring their small children out with everything that is going on."
With schools not in session, some children are missing the breakfasts and lunches that they ordinarily get at school.
SAISD is working to get meals to those kids. Certain district schools have been designated as pickup points -- including Brackenridge High School in King William -- and certain school bus stops are being designated for scheduled delivery of meals by bus.
SAISD school bus, dispensing meals on Labor Street, in front of the Refugio Place apartments, Thursday at 10:00 AM.
Every weekday -- Monday through Friday -- an SAISD bus will appear at various bus stops to hand out meals to kids 18 years old and under. Each child receives two packaged meals -- a breakfast and a lunch.
The deliveries are made on a schedule. The bus will arrive at each location at a specified time, hand out meals for thirty minutes, and then move to the next location.
For Lavaca and King William, these are the locations and scheduled times:
Labor Street, in front of the Refugio Place apartments, M-F, 9:45 AM to 10:15 AM
Santos Street, between the Hemisview and Refugio Place apartments, M-F, 10:25 AM to 10:55 AM
Students do not need to be enrolled in SAISD to participate, but must be 18 years of age and younger. Children receiving meals must be present at the time of pick up.
SAISD has designated 29 schools as meal distribution points.
For the Lavaca and King William neighborhoods, Brackenridge High School has been designated as a pickup point.
Pickups can be made at the high school from 10:30 AM to 12:30 AM.
The rules are the same as for bus delivery: Students do not need to be enrolled in SAISD to participate, but must be 18 years of age and younger. Children receiving meals must be present at the time of pick up.
For other neighborhoods, please check the schedule provided online by SAISD. This document lists both school pickup points and bus delivery points.
GET OUT THE WORD
Please help to get the word out. We spoke to the people working the bus in front of Refugio, and they told us that -- by the end of the Refugio time slot -- they had distributed 15 meal packages. Based on the number of kids who usually wait for the bus at that location on school days, only a fraction picked up meals. Update: Lavaca and Friends has prepared a flyer for the Refugio and HemisView time slots. A PDF version is available for download and printing.
