About Lavaca and Friends
WHAT IS LAVACA AND FRIENDS?
Lavaca and Friends means several things. First, it's an arts and entertainment district, made up by a pair of historic neighborhoods in central San Antonio -- Lavaca and King William. Second, it's a neighborhood happy hour. Third, it's a weekly events newsletter that covers what's going on in those neighborhoods. And, of course, it's this website.
Lavaca and Friends has been around for more than a decade. It got its start in January of 2010 when a group of Lavaca neighbors began gathering at La Frite, a neighborhood bistro, on Thursday evenings. Those neighbors invited friends, and those friends invited more friends. Ultimately, the happy hour expanded to include people from other nearby neighborhoods, and we moved to a bigger space at Liberty Bar.
Early on, when it was still a Lavaca happy hour, Jane Gennarelli sent an email each week, reminding people of the event. The email subject line was simply 'Lavaca Happy Hour'. After a while, Jane began to include reminders of other neighborhood events. At first, it was just a handful of events, maybe five or six. And then it grew. That newsletter now covers more than one hundred events each week, including events in all the downtown neighborhoods. To account for the wider area, Jane renamed the newsletter to 'Lavaca and Friends Happy Hour', and it's grown from a mailing list of a dozen people to about one thousand, including concierges at downtown hotels.

Our Dog Friendliness Inspector
The Southtown neighborhood is very dog-friendly, and we prefer places like Tito's and Lowcountry that make Micky welcome. Micky inspects all our choices for dog-friendliness.
